Tarahumar Permaculture Project- Mexico, 2010
Michael worked with the Tarahumar people of Copper Canyon, whose objective were to increase crop productivity, diversity of food staples, and address the lack of firewood due to local deforestation. Michael trained and worked with local farmers to build diverse market gardens at three different homesteads. Michael also trained and worked alongside the local farmers to build a tree nursery at the community’s central barn, where members could maintain the nursery and take saplings for their personal homes. Finally, they took the opportunity to do a major garbage collection of the surrounding area, and used the discarded plastic bottles and bags as seed trays in the tree nursery. Afterwards, six community members joined Michael at his farm in British Columbia for a week long permaculture workshop to learn more skills that they could adapt to their environment.
