Michael worked closely with a local partner to establish a branch of the Practical Permaculture Institute on a 3.5 acre piece of land on the island of Zanzibar, Tanzania. The project included clearing the land, digging swales and a pond to catch, redirect and hold rainwater, installing a grey water system, planting a fruit tree forest and a perennial fruit and vegetable garden, and building infrastructure to house and educate up to twenty students at a time, using local building techniques and materials. Additionally, Michael began a tree nursery to increase the Institute’s profitability. To date, PPIZ has graduated more than 200 students, held courses in local Swahili and English, and taught students from all over the world.
